The lives of 19th-century Norwegian immigrant Maren Hontvedt (Sarah Polley) and modern-day photographer Jean Janes (Catherine McCormack) entwine when Janes becomes obsessed with the circumstances surrounding a grisly massacre to which Hontvedt was the only survivor.
