We'll spare you from "Midas touch" jokes about this Orange County emo-punk band and get to the nitty-gritty: Thrice are going for broke, and it's either going to be career suicide or rebirth. Fire & Water is just half of a four-part series (Earth & Air will be released next spring) in which the quartet rejiggers their complex guitargasms in favor of' well, at press time, it's a mystery. But it's always good to see young bands take some risks, ill-advised or not.
