Reviews:

Don't call it a comeback; he's been here for years. Kurt Cobain was still more or less kicking when "Loser" broke, and Beck Hansen has since enjoyed a career favorably parallel to Radiohead: He made his name off a self-deprecating novelty grunge hit, then blew his audience's minds by releasing one eclectic, obtuse-angle masterpiece after another, from the hallucinogenic dance party of Odelay to the bittersweet acoustics of Sea Change. One of the more publicized quirks of this seventh record, originally released last October, was the inclusion of stickers to design your own cover, nursery school style. The deluxe version is, naturally, just as rife with goodies. You get three new cuts previously only available as import tracks, four decal sheets to satisfy your inner Pushead, all the videos for the album'"co-directed by Beck and producer/collaborator Nigel Godrich'"and a "graph paper lyric sheet." Oh yeah, and remixes. Gotta love the remixes. As for the unadulterated tuneage, the intended return to hip-hop hooray is as gloomy as anything Beck's ever done. Thirteen years in, he's still anything but un perdedor.
