'Up Before Dark' is the follow-up to 2007's 'Songs That Chose Me' and is another collection of timeless songs. Richard relocated to London since 'Songs', and the capital city is a thematic link on a number of the tracks on this long-awaited second album. Recorded and co-produced by Faithless guitarist, David Randall, the album exhibits an eclectic range of musical styles from the E Street Band-esque title track to the jazzy 'Excommunicated', the reggae-infused 'Swings n Roundabouts' to the folky 'A Beautiful Idea', Richard's most nakedly political song to date. Social commentary is also on evidence on the almost Prefab Sprout popness of 'The Truth Of Our Lives', making an intrieguing contrast with personal tracks such as 'Your Fantasy' and 'Nowhere Street'. As with 'Songs That Chose Me' what has been delivered here is a batch of memorable songs that will remain with you long after the album's end.
